Jaime challenged me to find a new destination during our stay at Lake Powell. Maybe somewhere warm where we could paddle. Checking the map and Campendium.com I found a great free spot on Lake Mead – Stewarts Point. We really didn’t know much about the area but ended up really liking it.
Our site was perched on a cliff overlooking the lake. Million dollar views for nada. It was fairly easy to drive down and turned out to be hard packed and not very dusty.
Our GPS seemed to think we were in the lake which might have been true at some point before a decade of drought.
The weather was just about perfect. Light winds made for great paddling.
Nearby Valley of Fire State Park had some interesting red rock formations and hikes.
I went back to get some sunset pictures and saw a female Big Horn Sheep with two juveniles.

Our campsite was only an hour away from Las Vegas but nicely isolated and very quite.
With our reservation coming up at Palm Springs we left Lake Mead and headed west to California. I found another great free spot in Mojave National Preserve. We stayed here last year around the same time.
